Definition: Condition where there is swelling of the veins in the lower portion of the rectum or the anus with or without pain is called Piles or Hemorrhoids
Types: There are 2 types of Piles- External and Internal.
External piles are external to the anus and may protrude out and internal piles are just outside the rectum and slightly inside the anus.
Causes of Piles or Hemorrhoids: Habitual constipation where there is straining while trying to pass hard stool is a common cause. It also occurs mostly in pregnant women and during childbirth. Other causes can be anal infections, Cirrhosis of liver etc.
Signs and Symptoms: Severe itching in the anal area, pain while sitting, bleeding during passage of stools, painful lumps right outside the anal area, persistent mild to severe backache are some common signs an symptoms of piles.
Diagnosis: A physical examination will usually reveal the condition. Sigmoidoscopy and Proctoscopy will confirm the condition.
Management and treatment: Over the counter Corticosteroid creams will usually reduce the swelling and the pain as also creams with Lidocaine. Stool softeners will usually reduce the acute onset of piles caused by hard stools and reduce bleeding.
Sitting in warm water (Sitz bath) will usually help in reducing the acute pain.
For cases that don’t respond to these treatments, Infrared coagulation to shrink internal hemorrhoids or hemorroidectomy or rubber band ligation will usually solve the problem.
Homeopathic Management of Piles: Homeopathic medicines have proved to be very effective in treating Chronic piles and the Science has gained quite a reputation as a safe therapeutic method to be tried before resorting to any other means of cure.
Some Common indicated Homeopathic remedies are:
Aloes: Constant aching and a sensation of bearing down in the pelvic area. Anal area very sore and application of cold water relieves the sore pain. Sense of insecurity, doesn’t know if stool or flatus will come out. Burning pains in the rectum and piles protrude out and feel lumpy. Passes mucus even after stool is passed.
Carbo Veg: Prominent symptoms indicating this remedy are intense itching and burning. The piles bleed and the anal area always feels wet and glutinous. Passing of very offensive flatus and frequent foul smelling stools.
Hamamelis Virginica: Profuse anal bleeding. There is a distinct pulsation in the anus with severe pain in the lumbar area that extends down to the legs.
Paeonia: Biting pains in the anus with severe itching. Anal orifice feels swollen and severe burning pains in the anus after stool call for this remedy. The entire perineal area is covered with crusts.
Other Indicated remedies are Causticum, Kali Carb, Nux Vom, Sulfur etc.
