What is Fissure in Ano?

Fissure In Ano is a condition in which the anoderm — a specialized tissue lining the anal canal and anus — develops a minor tear or cut. Since this tissue contains abundant sensory nerve endings that can sense even the slightest pain or touch, this condition can be extremely painful.

In the initial stage the fissure may involve only the epidermis, but in many cases the cut deepens due to straining during constipation and may reach the dermis, making the condition worse. The anus reacts by contracting to stabilize pain, but this further stretches the tear and hinders the healing process.

The pain is generally accompanied by bleeding that appears as streaks with stool during defecation. Fissures can be acute (superficial, healed within six weeks) or chronic (persisting more than six weeks, caused by deepening of the superficial cut). It is more common in people who are constipated and in some women after pregnancy.
